Unlike Propranolol, Metoprolol is selective β-1 receptor blocker; Eliminates the unwanted effects of bronchoconstriction (β2- effect). Its potency to block cardiac stimulation is similar to Propranolol & less likely to worsen Asthma, but not entirely safe. It may also be preferred to Propranolol in diabetics receiving insulin or oral hypoglycemic. With increase in dose can also block β-2 andrenoceptor.

Metoprolol is lowers blood pressure in hypertension and increase exercise tolerance in angina. It has little effecton pulmonary functions, peripheral resistance, and carbohydrate metabolism. It is given intravenously only if required during surgery or diagnostic procedure.

Indications:

Hypertension, angina pectoris, acute myocardial infarction, migraine

Side effects:

Dizziness, Insomnia, Headache, nightmare, hypotension, eye and ear reactions, bradycardia, G.I. pain, Heart burn, nausea, rashes etc
