Probiotics: Probiotics are living microorganisms which is used to balance intestinal microbial balance. Probiotics can be taken with food or without food. In other term, improve the functioning of large intestine. Commonly used probiotics are Bifidobacterium and Lactobacilli species.

In spite of medicinal or nutraceuticals, natural foods such as, milk and yoghurts are very good source of Probiotics. Probiotics exert their effect by producing substances and conditions which inhibits the growth of harmful bacteria in large intestine.

Diseases and antibiotics are the main cause of probiotics deficiency in body.  Probiotics play important role in digestion and excretion of remaining food from the large intestine. Before reaching to large intestine, Probiotics have to pass through stomach and small intestine where they have to encounter with acid and digestive enzymes.

Prebiotics: Probiotics are living microorganism, hence, can get effected by these reactions.  To overcome this problem, Prebiotics are used. Prebiotics are the food substances that remain unaffected by acid and enzymes, and can easily reach to colon in intact form. In colon, Prebiotics also selectively promote the growth of probiotic bacteria.

For example Inulin, prebiotic which is polyfructose and soluble dietary fiber and resistance to enzymatic activity. It reaches to large intestine and fermented by resident bacteria. Probiotics also digest prebiotics, hence act as fertilizers for probiotics.
