What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is a board term, not limited to any single book or way to treat, diagnose or cure a disease, symptoms or condition of human being. Ayurveda covers all things that are related to human being wellness.

According to Charak Samhita, “A scripture who describes the life’s interests, harm, pathology, value, consequences and symptoms is known as Ayurveda.”

The scripture which describes beneficial and harmful substances for life, diagnosis of diseases and remedies for calming diseases is called Ayurveda by Scholars.

 Meaning of Ayurveda:

By which human being attains longevity and also knows its secrets, is known as Ayurveda.

Ayurveda word is composed of two word – Ayur (Life) and Veda (Knowledge).

Ayurveda is based upon concept of “Swasthya swastha Rakshanam Athurasyasa Vikara Prashmanam” which means “Swasthya swastha Rakshanam i.e. people who are healthy should maintain their healthiness and Athurasyasa Vikara Prashmanam i.e. people who are unhealthy should be made free from diseases”.

Ayurvedic System of medicines is one of the oldest treatment system dated back to 5000 years ago. Ayurveda is based upon creating balance between tridosha (Vata, Kapha and Pitta), agni , dhatu and the normal excretion of mala  along with a happy state of atma (soul), indriya, and manas (mind) through Judi Buti(Herbs), yoga (Physical activities) and sudhi (Purification).

Ayurvedic Medicines

Ayurvedic Medicines are the medicines which manufactured exclusively in accordance with the formulae describe in the authoritative books of ayurvedic system of medicines (classical medicines) or with special formulae with herbs mentioned in authoritative books (patent or proprietary medicines).

Drug and Cosmetic Act & Rules define the Ayurvedic, Siddha and Unani drugs as “Ayurvedic, Siddha or Unani drug includes all medicines intended for internal or external use for or in the diagnosis, treatment, mitigation or prevention of disease or disorder in human beings or animals, and manufactured exclusively in accordance with the formulae described in, the authoritative books of Ayurvedic, Siddha and Unani Tibb systems of medicine, specified in the First Schedule.”

Ayurvedic Medicines are getting popularity day by day due to having no or minimal side effects as compare to synthetically prepared medicines and products. As demand of ayurvedic medicines are increasing, number of business opportunities in ayurvedic industry are also increasing.
